REPORT ON GENERAL MEETING OF 17TH JANUARY, 2004
Constitution Reform Forum (CRF)
The matrix was accepted as the template for the focus of discussion in pursuance of mobilisation for constitution reform.
Discussion next centered on the organisation of a regional conference of Civil Society organisations to discuss constitution reform in Trinidad and Tobago in particular; the region generally and to include special on plural societies and relations within ‘ twin ‘ island states.
Olabisi Kuboni of the Research Committee outlined plans for the conference, including persons contacted to attend, from the region.
It was agreed that the creation of a secretariat was critical for advancement to constitution reform. Also seen as essential to the advancement of the process was the ability to communicate through the media. Emphasis to be placed on efforts to access talk shows hosted by David Abdullah and Sam Howard. The need to engage social justice and other groups was emphasised by Andy Burkett, Sonah Nagassar and Louis Blake.
The forum agreed to organize the Regional Conference to be held on Friday 30th April 2004 and Saturday 1st May. Day one of the conference to focus on the sharing of experiences in working sessions with presentation of reports and day two to be devoted to presentations by experts in Constitutional Law and Government.
A committee to organize the planning, financing, logistics and Public Relations aspects of the conference was named and includes: Olabisi Kuboni Nik Mitchell Douglas Mendes Louis Blake Akins Vidale Frank Clarke David De Merieux Anton Tsoi A Sue
First meeting of the organizing committee is scheduled for Saturday 24th January 2004 at 2:30 pm UWI Campus St. Augustine.
It was also agreed that an invitation be delivered to president Maxwell Richards requesting that he deliver the formal opening address of the conference.
